SLJ

Kia ora bloggers,

Here is my Cicada food dish because I dont really like collecting Cicada skins. If i ever had a Cicada as my dinner I would rather eat my own hair because Cicadas to me are not that fascinating. I could imagine a Cicada in my mouth being super crunchy and a lot of weird tiny bits in my mouth. anyways here is my goggle drawing.

  1. Kia ora Alyssa. I think creating a digital image is a great idea as an alternative to finding actual cicada skins. How hungry would you have to be to eat cicadas if there was no other options? I guess that's why it's always important to be prepared and take supplies with you for things like hiking.

  2. Kia ora Alyssa,
I am working as a facilitator in schools. I DO find cicadas fascinating which is why the learning activities I created are cicada-themed.
Thanks for your honesty about cicadas. You cicadas look like they are marching across the plate which I find kind of unsettling!
Okay, I confess, I haven't eaten cicadas! I have eaten crickets and huhu grubs. The weird tiny bits on insects are what I find most fascinating.

  3. Kia ora Alyssa,

Ruby here, a commenter from SLJ.

Awesome that you're experimenting with google drawing. This is a cool image!

What this makes me think of is the fact that many scientists have been saying over the years that more and more we are going to be turning to insects as a protein source, because the way we currently consume mean as a society is unsustainable. They have even started serving live ants on lettuce as a fancy entree in one of the top restaurants in the world! I don't know if cicadas would be on their list to try and cook, but it would be an interesting question to ask a professional chef.

As for myself, I'm with you! I don't think I would like to eat them. Although I generally do like crunchy things. If you had to eat one type of insect, cooked by a world class chef, what do you think you would choose?

    Keep up the great creations,

    Ruby

  4. Kia ora Alyssa!

Like you, I can't think of anything worse than chewing on a cicada!! I agree, the crunchy feel of the exoskeleton in my mouth makes me ill! I really do find the subject of cicadas very interesting and I have thoroughly enjoyed Maria's activity, but I couldn't eat cicadas (except maybe as Phil says, when starving in some wilderness where I'd run out of ALL other food options!! Do you share Maria's fascination with cicadas? Or are you, like me, a little cautious of them?

    Look forward to your reply.

Chris here, again! Tēnā koe for completing another task!

I think you’ve taken a great approach here. No one should be making you do things you don’t want to do with no real purpose, so good on you for taking an approach to this activity that you are more comfortable with! I don’t have the same problem with cicadas that you do, but I agree they probably aren’t super fun to eat. The image you’ve created is pretty as well, ka pai on varying the types of cicada design you’ve used!

Looking forward to seeing what you post over these last couple of weeks!

    Ngā mihi!
    Chris
